Where would our world be without electricity? A similar question applies to the modern railway - where would it be without electric traction? The industry could not survive without electric power.

Moreover, the pedigree of the modern electric powered railway goes back a long way: Davidson’s pioneering trials of 1842 in Scotland, took place only 13 years after Rocket had won the famous competition at Rainhill - a success that in turn ushered in the inter-city railway era!

The book is a compilation, introducing examples of the pioneering electrification schemes together with oddities of power supply. As the title suggests, an eclectic mix reflecting the range and diversity of interests covered by The Stephenson Locomotive Society and its members. The Society was born as the electrification era began to flourish; one of the first outings by members was to view the new London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) electric car sheds near Norwood; electric traction in all variants and flavours is therefore a fitting subject for a Society publication.

This second book in the series of extracts from material held within the Society archives, or written by members, is Part 1 of the collection regarding electrification matters. The author has written widely on the subject of electrification in particular, and variations from railway orthodoxy in general.
